FABIO BIONDI AND EUROPA GALANTE
CONCERT ON OCTOBER 30
Leading period instrument ensemble performs Baroque music from the Spanish court
CHICAGO, August 16, 2012 -  In their first joint effort, the Latino Music Festival and University of Chicago Presents announce a concert featuring the highly acclaimed international touring period instrument ensemble, Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante, on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.  The ensemble will perform one of the first public concerts in the Performance Hall of the new Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, offering a program of baroque music in vogue in the Spanish court during the 18th century. This concert is also supported by the Italian Cultural Institute – Chicago.
For this tour including concerts in New York, Washington and Chicago, Europa Galante brings five musicians:
Fabio Biondi, violin
Andrea Rognoni, violin
Antonio Fantinuoli, cello
Giangiacomo Pinardi, theorbo
Paola Poncet, clave
Baroque music cannot be comfortably divided by the nationality of the composers.  In that period Spain, Germany and Italy were not yet the countries we know today; loyalties were determined by ties to kings and other aristocrats more than for the love of countries yet to be defined.  Composers of Italian origin, such as Vivaldi and Corelli, were very popular in all the European courts.  It was common for Spanish musicians, such as José Herrando, to spend time studying in Italy, while other Italian musicians, such as Michele Mascitti, would spend part of their lives in foreign courts. Cherubini lived in France, and a while later Boccherini was adopted by the Spanish crown.
This concert by Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante features the type of music in vogue in the Spanish court in the early part of the 18th century, including Vivaldi, Corelli, Mascitti and two Spanish born composers: José Herrando and Francisco José de Castro.

Their recordings have garnered many awards, including the “Premio Cini” of Venice and the “Choc de la Musique,” as well as five Golden Diapasons, Golden Diapason of the Year in France, RTL Prize, “Record of the Year” nominations in Spain, Canada, Sweden, France and Finland, and the “Prix du Disque.”  The ensemble has been nominated twice for a GRAMMY Award, and their Four Seasons CD sold an astounding 500,000 copies worldwide.  Since 1998 Europa Galante has recorded exclusively with Virgin Classics.
About the Latino Music Festival
2012 marks the seventh annual Latino Music Festival.  The festival is one of the core programs of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago (ILCC).  The Latino Music Festival of Chicago produces performances and promotes awareness of intellectually significant music from Latin America and Spain.  The Latino Music Festival functions as a bridge, bringing Latin American classical music to Chicago’s general audience and at the same time embraces an educational role by bringing this music to the Hispanic neighborhoods through concerts and educational programs.  The primary focus of the festival is to bring the best Hispanic music from the present and the past to various Chicago communities. The festival also places special emphasis upon the performance of educationally related concerts, and a dialogue between Chicago, Latin America and Spain.  The Latino Music Festival focuses on local talent, featuring several of Chicago’s most prestigious orchestras, ensembles and soloists, as well as a number of talented young professionals.  For more information and the complete Festival's schedule, please visit http://www.latinomusicfest.org
